ATLANTA — Georgia’s powerful House speaker resigned
Thursday after a suiciide attempt and allegations by his ex-wife of an affair
with a lobbyist.

Glenn Richardson, the state’s first GOP speaker since
Reconstruction, had won sympathy from even his political enemies when he
revealed last month that he attempted suicide by swallowing sleeping pills.
But then his ex-wife went on TV and accused him of having “a full-out affair”
with a lobbyist while they were still married.

Michael Merhige, accused of killing four relatives at a Thanksgiving dinner in
Jupiter, had threatened to kill family members before and often refused to take
medication prescribed to treat his longtime mental illness, according to court
records and Merhige’s mother.

In April 2006, during a fight with his
sister at their parents’ house outside Miami, Merhige told the sister “I’m going
to slit your throat,” according to a domestic violence complaint filed by the
sister, Carla Merhige.

ANTIDEPRESSANT: Owosso man judged incompetent to stand trial

CORUNNA –
The 33-year-old Owosso man accused of two Sept. 11 murders was found incompetent
to stand trial and will be remanded to the State Department of Mental Health for
treatment.

Sixty-sixth District Court Judge Terrance P. Dignan signed an
order Wednesday afternoon finding Harlan Drake incompetent. However, Dignan, in
his written opinion, said there is a substantial probability Drake will attain
competence with treatment.

Dignan’s decision was based on a report filed
by the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ann Arbor, where Drake was
evaluated.

DEPRESSION MED: Rage: Elderly Man Beats & Bites his Doctor: England

A PENSIONER who bit his doctor and punched
him in the face in front of “scared” patients will have to serve a year behind
bars.

Gabriel Moya, 69, flew into a rage at a receptionist at Gossops
Green Surgery, when she handed him a prescription he thought was
incomplete.

Moya, who has had heart surgery in the past, was told to calm
down by a doctor but lashed out, punching him twice in the face and biting him
on the arm as he was pinned to the floor.

ZOLOFT: Wrongful Death Suit Filed in Behalf of the Andrea Roberts’ Family

SHERMAN — In a suit recently transferred to the East
Texas federal court, the maker of a popular anti-depressant drug is being blamed
for a murder-suicide committed by a woman who had taken the drug.

Court
papers say that after taking Pfizer’s drug Zoloft, 41-year-old Andrea Roberts

shot and killed her two children and husband before turning the gun on
herself.

Her parents, Glenda and John Robert McCoy, and brother, John
Andrew McCoy, acting pro se, first filed a suit in Denton County on July 31 on
behalf of decedents Jon Andrea Roberts, Michael Roberts, Micayla Roberts and
Dylan Roberts.
