Vatican to Address Psychiatric Drugging of Children/Pregnant Women

An issue far too long ignored by all religions will be the subject of an upcoming Vatican Conference, “The Child as a Person and as a Patient: Therapeutic Approaches Compared.” The conference will discuss the harmful consequences of the overuse of prescription drugs for treating mental and emotional disorders in children, as well as pregnant mothers where children are exposed to these drugs in the womb. According to the Catholic News agency, the conference hopes to prove that “psychosocial options” are better than “psychotropic care.” Experts taking part in the conference also hope to show that the risks heavily outweigh the benefits of the drugs.

Six years in the making, the conference will focus on two main drug groups, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, known as SSRIs or antidepressants, and antipsychotics.
