ST JOHN’S WORT

If you are getting herbal supplements from GNC, Target, Wal-Mart or Walgreens this information will explain clearly to you why I NEVER have and NEVER will and why I am so particular about the companies I get products from. As I have mentioned in comments, many of the natural product companies have been bought out by Pharma. This has been going on for several decades. You need to know who is behind your herbal supplement company.

On February 2, 2015 the New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman and Executive Deputy Attorney General Martin J. Mack issued cease-and-desist orders to GNC Holdings, Inc., Target Corporation, Walgreens, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., regarding the marketing of up to seven herbal supplements: Gingko [sic] biloba, St. John’s Wort, Ginseng, Garlic, Echinacea, Saw Palmetto, and Valerian root. (Valerian was only tested from Target, in place of Ginseng.)

So if you have been using these products purchased from these stores and obtaining none of the expected results you now know why. Considering the misinformation out about St John’s Wort thus encouraging those who have been on antidepressants to attempt to replace their drugs with St John’s Wort, knowing that they were not actually getting that, but a filler instead, would be a good thing! If you have not heard why that is. The quick explanation is that antidepressants impair your ability to metabolize serotonin thus causing levels to rise too high. Therefore when using products like St. John’s Wort you are increasing the levels of serotonin which the body can no longer metabolize, just as antidepressants do, and will suffer similar adverse effects associated with antidepressant use or elevated serotonin. The herb has also been known to induce the potentially fatal Serotonin Syndrome just as antidepressants do where via the elevated serotonin death is produced by multiple organ failure.
