In yet another demonstration to prove that the Mafia does not even begin to hold a candle to the pharmaceutical cartel, pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline has recently been fined nearly $500 Million, for allegedly setting up a “massive bribery network” to get doctors and hospitals to use its products. Anyone surprised?
Some of those GSK products would be the antidepressants Paxil and Wellbutrin and Zyban the stop smoking med that is nothing more than Wellbutrin with a new name and Brisdelle which is Paxil with a new name prescribed for menopause.
Biggest Fine Ever Imposed in China
The fine was the biggest ever imposed by a Chinese court. Five former employees were sentenced to two to four years in jail, but ordered deported instead of imprisoned. The court gave Mark Reilly, former head of GSK Chinese operations, a three-year prison sentence with a four-year reprieve, which meant he is set to be deported instead of serving his time in a Chinese jail. His co-defendants received two to four years prison sentences with reprieves.
Reilly was accused of operating a “massive bribery network.” Police said it is believed Reilly authorized his salespeople to pay doctors, hospital officials and health institutions to use GSK’s products since 2009. They found that the company had funneled up to $488.8 Million to travel agencies to facilitate bribes to doctors and officials. The amount spent was the exact amount of the fine imposed upon them.
Now that is a LOT of money to use for bribes! Just think about what they must be making in profits if they are spending that much just for bribes! AMAZING!
Where Does the Money Go?
We have seen similar fines here in the United States. A few years ago Pfizer paid out a $500 Million fine for racketeering. But my question has always been in these big fines that are filed against these drug makers….Where does that money go?!
We all know who was damaged in this – the patients who were given the drugs. WHEN does someone pay them some of this money coming in on these huge fines to help them recover from the damages produced as a result of this bribery network?
