Syracuse Mother and Two Daughters Dead

Kyler

Kyler (32), Kenadee (13), Isabella (7)

UPDATE: 1/17/13: See latest news below stating link to “history of depression” ….

Tuesday evening the news broke that three bodies had been found in this home after neighbors heard what they thought to be gun shots. This morning police announced that it was a mother and her two daughters who were found dead. Police identify them as Kyler Ramsdell-Oliva, 32, and her two daughters — Kenadee Oliva, 13, and Isabella Oliva, 7. What an absolutely beautiful mother and daughters! We are still waiting to learn who killed whom. Be it mother or daughter who was doing the shooting, in both cases we find the use of antidepressants to be very, very high. (It has been confirmed that mother was the shooter.)

Here is one comment from Kyler’s Facebook page indicating there were some health issues:

  • Thanks for your input Kyler..I am so sick of Drs and their guessing games but I am with you on the signs…hopefully next year will be much better for us all..love you Sweetpea be happy

Well mid Oct appears to have been a perfect time for the prescribing of an antidepressant or the increase in an existing one. This was Kyler’s post about her grandfather who passed away then. He died days after this post: Kyler Ramsdell-Oliva

My grandpa, who is my heart amd soul, my hero, my love is passing from this world to the next soon. I’m not much of a prayer but please pray for his wife and our family.
And sadly the youngest child,  Bella,  had her seventh birthday just Saturday the 11th.

To indicate how completely out of character such a violent act as this murder/suicide was for Kyler … she posted this on her Facebook page just three weeks ago:

The following is the comment I posted in the local news on this case – something all of us should be doing when these tragedies happen. I would have posted our database of cases (www.ssristories.drugawareness.org) mentioned if this news source allowed links but they do not.

“David W. you are correct that it is rare for a mother to take the lives of her children, but not when the mother is on an antidepressant. After tracking such cases for 25 years in building a database of these cases, which has been used in scientific studies, I suspected such to be the case last night when the news first broke and called a friend in the neighborhood to confirm that.

“Our research indicates over 90% of these mothers are taking or in a few cases have just abruptly discontinued the use of an antidepressant. And it was 15 years ago now that I did the Leeza Gibbons Show addressing this very issue. Sadly nothing has changed since then other than the increased frequency of the cases – little different than what we have found with well over 90% of school shooters being on antidepressants. Curious that both were extremely rare before the introduction of these new designer antidepressants which now have both suicidal and homicidal ideation (compulsive thoughts) listed as potential side effects.

“In this case I once again await confirmation of that connection to these drugs while I continue to wait for the world to see the evidence I have seen in over two decades of testifying as an expert witness in these cases.

“Why post here? Because this is a public safety issue that never should have remained hidden from the general public due to vested interests. Even in doing the Leeza Gibbons Show we were told as we walked onto the stage that we would be allowed to say the word “antidepressant” but we were not to say the brand names of the drugs “because of our advertisers.”

Depression connection mentioned 1/17/13:

“On Tuesday, Kyler Ramsdell-Oliva, 32, shot her two daughters, Kenadee Oliva, 13, and Isabella Oliva, 7, in their Syracuse home before killing herself.

“The mother had just broken up with her fiance and told him to leave their home. Close friend Pegi Butler said Ramsdell-Oliva had fought depression, but things in her life had improved in recent years. She confessed to Butler that she still loved the man deeply but was heartbroken. Still, Butler never suspected she or the girls were in any danger when they spoke on Sunday.”

In another article Pegi Butler went on to say, “Over the past three years, Butler was hopeful Ramsdell-Oliva was conquering the depression she had fought through her youth, agreeing to participate in counseling and getting her life running smoothly.”

So with being treated for depression for so many years it is clear to me she was either currently on an antidepressant or in withdrawal from one when the shooting occurred.

WITHDRAWAL WARNING: In sharing this information about adverse reactions to antidepressants I always recommend that you also give reference to my CD on safe withdrawal, Help! I Can’t Get Off My Antidepressant!, so that we do not have more people dropping off these drugs too quickly – a move which I have warned from the beginning can be even more dangerous than staying on the drugs!

The FDA also now warns that any abrupt change in dose of an antidepressant can produce suicide, hostility or psychosis. These reactions can either come on very rapidly or even be delayed for months depending upon the adverse effects upon sleep patterns when the withdrawal is rapid! You can find the hour and a half long CD on safe and effective withdrawal helps here: http://store.drugawareness.org/
