HARVARD EXPERTS: THE MYTH OF SAFE & EFFECTIVE DRUGS: WHY THE FDA CANNOT BE TRUSTED

In an article soon to be published in a special issue of the Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics (JLME) and coming from Harvard experts is an eye opener for those who blindly follow FDA guidelines thinking that will protect them and their loved ones from the harm that can come from prescription medications.

The article first alerting us to this new research comes from the Harvard Ethics blog of one of the three authors of the paper and is titled “Risky Drugs: Why The FDA Cannot Be Trusted” by Donald W. Light. He begins this article with some important points about this 35 page paper:

“A forthcoming article … presents evidence that about 90 percent of all new drugs approved by the FDA over the past 30 years are little or no more effective for patients than existing drugs.

“The bar for “safe” is equally low, and over the past 30 years, approved drugs have caused an epidemic of harmful side effects, even when properly prescribed. Every week, about 53,000 excess hospitalizations and about 2400 excess deaths occur in the United States among people taking properly prescribed drugs to be healthier. One in every five drugs approved ends up causing serious harm,1 while one in ten provide substantial benefit compared to existing, established drugs. This is the opposite of what people want or expect from the FDA.”

Original article:http://www.ethics.harvard.edu/lab/blog/312-risky-drugs

Let me point out here that I believe that figure for deaths to be skewed because on our site at www.drugawareness.org we quote a 1995 study done by pharmacists alarmed by the high number of deaths due to prescription medications. They found that prescription drugs are the third, not forth, leading cause of death in America and that there are 200,000 deaths per year as a result as opposed to the later figure of only half that amount which figure they are using here.

Either way you count you can see how closely the death toll comes to the death toll at 9/11. Let me remind you that for only one week’s worth of deaths we are continuing to suffer every week since then as a result of prescription medications we went to war for a decade after 9/11! We need to demand our government take this information and do something about this tragic loss in our country! As you read more from this new article you will see how much they are playing a part in this problem though.

You can learn much from the title of the article about to be published “Institutional Corruption of Pharmaceuticals and the Myth of Safe and Effective Drugs.” The authors of the paper are:

Donald W. Light
Rowan University, School of Osteopathic Medicine; Harvard University – Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics

Joel Lexchin
York University

Jonathan J. Darrow
Harvard Law School

Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics, Vol. 14, No. 3, 2013, Forthcoming

And the abstract will give you insight into what you will find:

“Over the past 35 years, patients have suffered from a largely hidden epidemic of side effects from drugs that usually have few offsetting benefits. The pharmaceutical industry has corrupted the practice of medicine through its influence over what drugs are developed, how they are tested, and how medical knowledge is created. Since 1906, heavy commercial influence has compromised Congressional legislation to protect the public from unsafe drugs. The authorization of user fees in 1992 has turned drug companies into the FDA’s prime clients, deepening the regulatory and cultural capture of the agency. Industry has demanded shorter average review times and, with less time to thoroughly review evidence, increased hospitalizations and deaths have resulted. Meeting the needs of the drug companies has taken priority over meeting the needs of patients. Unless this corruption of regulatory intent is reversed, the situation will continue to deteriorate. We offer practical suggestions including: separating the funding of clinical trials from their conduct, analysis, and publication: independent FDA leadership; full public funding for all FDA activities; measures to discourage R&D [Research and Development] on drugs with few if any new clinical benefits; and the creation of a National Drug Safety Board.”

The paper in its entirety can be found here: http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2282014

I believe it is quite clear that the reason 90% of new drugs out there are no more effective than those older drugs already on the market is that the pharmaceutical companies are continuously redesigning these drugs so that they can obtain new patents on them. Of course that is done in order to bring in more income because you can charge far more for patented drugs than you can unpatented drugs.

When you combine this information about 90% of drugs on the market being no more effective than older meds with the information we have posted on our site from Dr. John Ioannidis, who is the world’s leading expert on medical research, stating that 90% of medical research is basically bogus, it makes you question why anyone would want to risk using prescription medications at all!!

After reading the interview from the Atlantic Monthly article titled “Lies, Damn Lies, and Medical Science” with Dr. Ioannidis you have to ask yourself if you would not take your car to be fixed by a mechanic who is relying on information about the car that is 90% incorrect, why would you take your body or the body of your loved ones to a doctor who is relying on information that is 90% incorrect? At this point it would appear to me that the risk is far too great! But I leave you all this information to study and then to answer that question for yourself.

Here is the link to the interview with Dr. Ioannidis: http://www.drugawareness.org/lies-damned-lies-and-medical-science/

WARNING: In sharing this information about adverse reactions to antidepressants I always recommend that you also give reference to my CD on safe withdrawal, Help! I Can’t Get Off My Antidepressant!, so that we do not have more people dropping off these drugs too quickly – a move which I have warned from the beginning can be even more dangerous than staying on the drugs!

The FDA also now warns that any abrupt change in dose of an antidepressant can produce suicide, hostility or psychosis. And these reactions can either come on very rapidly or even be delayed for months depending upon the adverse effects upon sleep patterns when the withdrawal is rapid! You can find the CD on safe and effective withdrawal helps here: http://store.drugawareness.org/

DEPRESSION MED: Postpartum: Woman Drowns Two Month Old Baby: Texas

Paragraph 12 reads: “Her family said Modarresi was depressed and on
medication.”

Mom Charged With Capital Murder

Narjes Modarresi First Reported Her Baby Son Kidnapped
POSTED: Friday, April 23, 2010
UPDATED: 11:58 am CDT April 23, 2010

HOUSTON — A mother who first said her 2-month-old son was kidnapped and
then led investigators to his body has been charged with his death, police
told KPRC Local 2 Friday.

Narjes Modarresi, 28, was charged with capital murder in the death of
Masih Golabbakhsh.

Court documents said she “knowingly caused the death by placing the baby’s
face down in mud and water.”

“The doctor performing the autopsy noted water and mud in the (baby’s)
lung, stomach and airway, concluding that (the baby) was alive prior to being
placed face down in the muddy water and buried,” a court official read in
court.

The Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the baby’s cause of death as
asphyxiation.

Modarresi did not appear in magistrate court Friday morning because
authorities said she is at the Woman’s County Jail undergoing a mental
evaluation.

Houston police issued an Amber Alert for Masih Wednesday after his mother
reported that he was snatched from his stroller in the 8000 block of
Woodway Drive, near Briar Bend Park, at about 5:30 p.m.

Detectives said they questioned the mother and her story was inconsistent.

At about 2 a.m. Thursday, the mother led officers to Masih’s body, which
was found in a muddy stream near where she said he was abducted, police
said.

Officials said the couple also has a 3-year-old, who has been placed with
relatives.
Narjes Modarresi

Relatives said Modarresi was from Iran and was learning to speak English.
She has only been in the United States for a few years, family members
said.

Her family said Modarresi was depressed and on medication.

George Parnham was hired as Modarresi’s attorney. Parnham is best known
for defending Andrea Yates, 45, who drowned her five children on June 20,
2001, while she suffered from postpartum depression.

Dr. Richard Pesikoff, with the Baylor College of Medicine, said there are
three levels of depression — the third level being most severe —
postpartum depression with psychotic features.

“Not only are you severely depressed, but your ability to tell the
difference between what’s real and what’s not real is lost. At this point, you
hear stories about mothers who kill their children,” Pesikoff said.

Pesikoff is not treating Modarresi.

ANTIDEPRESSANTS: Sleeping Pills: Death: 32 Year Old Woman Dies from a …

Depressed woman died from cocktail of drugs

11:00am
Friday 4th December 2009

A woman who was suffering from depression died
after taking a cocktail of prescription drugs, an inquest heard.

Bolton
Coroner’s Court heard that Samantha Andrews, aged 32, of Harpford Close, Breightmet,
died after taking drugs including sleeping tablets, anti-depressants and
anti-hystamines.

But Assistant Deputy Coroner Peter Watson said there
was insufficient evidence to prove that Miss Andrews committed suicide and
recorded an open verdict.

The inquest heard that Miss Andrews, who had
trained as a nurse, had previously twice taken overdoses but told doctors that
these were a cry for help.

She was found unconscious in her bed by her
partner, Philip Brockbank, on March 2 and taken for treatment at the Royal
Bolton Hospital, before being transferred to a hospital in Wigan where she died
on March 5.

The cause of death was brain death due to lack of oxygen,
caused by the overdose.

Mr Watson said: “She was still a young woman who
clearly had talent but had troubles in her life.”

Brittany Murphy Cause of Death? Serotonin Syndrome?

NOTE FROM Ann Blake-Tracy:

Brittany Murphy‘s husband and mother are saying they do not think Brittany
died as a result of the drugs she was taking. Let me explain why they are wrong.
What a shame they do not have this information.

#1 Brittany had mitral valve prolapse where a heart valve does not close
properly like the drugs Fen-Phen and Redux produced that killed so
many people. And what did Dr. Heidi Connelly from the Mayo Clinic find that
these drugs did to produce the heart valve problem?

She found that it was the increased levels of serotonin produced by
the drugs that caused a gummy gooey glossy substance to build up on the heart
valves so that they could not close properly.

What do Prozac (Sarafem) and Robitussin both increase? Serotonin levels
and taken together they can produce serious reactions or even kill you due to
the elevated levels of serotonin the mix of these two drugs can
produce.

#2 The day after Brittany died a new study was released demonstrating an
increase in heart failure for women taking antidepressants and anti-anxiety
medications. Brittany was on both Sarafem (Prozac marketed for PMS) and Klonopin
(an anti-anxiety medication – not sure who told Brittany‘s husband that this
drug is an anti-seizure med).

#3 Flu-like symptoms are often symptoms of a toxic reaction to medications.
This is never stressed enough to patients! In treating the flu-like symptoms,
that could easily have been a toxic reaction to meds, with Robitussin which
contains the serotonergic agent dextromethorphan, it could have pushed Brittany
over the edge leading to multiple organ failure that comes from elevated levels

of serotonin – the same thing that killed Anna Nicole Smith’s young son,
Daniel.

________________________________________

Murphy had mitral valve prolapse, a common condition where a heart valve does
not properly close, but doctors said the actress “would live a long and healthy
life,” Monjack said.

He said his wife took the anti-seizure medication klonopin ever since an
episode she had while filming “8 Mile.” She also occasionally took Sarafem, a
drug aimed at pain and mood swings during menstrual periods, Monjack said.

He said he did not think a harmful interaction of drugs played a role in his
wife’s death. She had been sick with flu-like symptoms in the days before her

death and had been taking Robitussin, but nothing more, he said.

Brittany‘s mom, husband say drugs didn’t kill her

Weber was Murphy‘s favorite photo of herself. (AP Photo/Chris

A month after Brittany Murphy‘s mysterious death, her mother and husband say
they are convinced the actress died of natural causes, not drugs or an eating
disorder.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday, Sharon Murphy and Simon
Monjack said that Murphy did not use drugs or alcohol and that they are awaiting
a determination from coroner’s officials that will end speculation prescription
medicine caused Murphy‘s death on Dec. 20 at age 32.

Monjack said some of the prescription medications found in the couple’s
Hollywood Hills home belonged to him.

Murphy had mitral valve prolapse, a common condition where a heart valve does
not properly close, but doctors said the actress “would live a long and healthy
life,” Monjack said.

“She had a fear of dying,” Sharon Murphy said. “She would not take too much
caffeine. She wouldn’t even have a glass of champagne on New Year’s. She was
just high on life, and people see that as something else I guess.”

Murphy, the star of varied films such as “Clueless,” “8 Mile,” “Sin City” and
the television series “King of the Hill,” was buried in a private funeral on
Christmas Eve. At the service, Monjack told mourners that the actress was his
best friend and soul mate, sentiments he repeated during the Tuesday
interview.

Monjack, who married Murphy in 2007, said police and coroner’s officials have
not contacted the family to say his wife’s death was from anything other than
natural causes.

Authorities continue to investigate her death but do not suspect foul play.
An autopsy was inconclusive and coroner’s officials are awaiting the results of
toxicology and tissue tests before determining what killed the actress.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Tuesday that he had not seen Murphy‘s
autopsy report, but the condition of her heart would be looked at before her
cause of death is determined.

Sharon Murphy described the wait for answers as torture. “We wish we knew,”
she said.

“She was alive one minute and she was dead the next,” Monjack said.

The pair worked frantically to save Murphy‘s life the morning she died, as
revealed in a heart-wrenching 911 call where Sharon Murphy implores, “Brittany,
please come back!” as Monjack performs CPR.

Sharon Murphy said she has largely ignored tabloid reports that have
suggested her daughter abused drugs or had an eating disorder. She said her
daughter had always been petite and ate often, but burned it off with an active
lifestyle.

Monjack, who has read some of the reports, called them lies based on
anonymous sources who weren’t close to Brittany Murphy or him. He said he is
considering suing some British outlets for “outright fabrications.”

He said the rumors of her drug use were unfounded and had cost his wife roles
in some major films.

He said he is also considering whether to sue the Los Angeles County
Coroner’s Department over an initial report that was obtained by celebrity Web
site TMZ.com, which
listed several prescription medications found in Murphy‘s home. Monjack said
most of the medicines listed in the report were his.

He said his wife took the anti-seizure medication klonopin ever since an
episode she had while filming “8 Mile.” She also occasionally took Sarafem, a
drug aimed at pain and mood swings during menstrual periods, Monjack said.

Klonopin has been cited in several celebrity overdose deaths, but with many
other medications mixed in.

He said he did not think a harmful interaction of drugs played a role in his
wife’s death. She had been sick with flu-like symptoms in the days before her
death and had been taking Robitussin, but nothing more, he said.

Monjack and Sharon Murphy remain in the Hollywood Hills home where Brittany

Murphy collapsed a month ago. They share grief and memories of Murphy, speaking
highly of each other. Monjack calls Murphy his soul mate; Sharon Murphy calls
her daughter “my other half.”

DVDs of some of Brittany Murphy‘s films lay near the entertainment center,
and several framed photographic portraits of the actress that Monjack shot adorn
the walls and other areas of the living room.

“I’m comforted by these photographs,” Monjack said. “I’m comforted by the
transformation from girl to woman that I witnessed.”

The couple planned to display for exhibition some of the
photographs, which can be seen at http://www.simonmonjackphotography.com.

It was just one of the couple’s plans, which included starting a family and
moving to New York. Sharon Murphy said her daughter was talking about having a
child the night before she died. Monjack said they already had baby names picked
out.

Now the pair are planning a public memorial to celebrate Brittany Murphy‘s
life, which will be held in the Los Angeles area at the end of February. Monjack
and Sharon Murphy said they have asked many of the actress’ friends to refrain
from making public comments, but that they expect the memorial will remind
people of her talents and beauty.

Monjack said the memorial will coincide with the launch of the Brittany
Murphy Foundation, a charitable group that he said will support arts education
for children and other causes his wife believed in.

Both Monjack and Sharon Murphy said they expect respect to grow for Brittany
Murphy‘s work and life, once questions about her death are settled. The actress
had completed two unreleased films before her death but their prospects are
uncertain.

Sharon Murphy expressed reluctance about their release because of the
filmmakers’ inexperience, but Monjack said he would approve if the releases were
respectfully done and the profits donated to the Brittany Murphy Foundation.

“I think the dust will settle, the truth will come out,” Monjack said. “I
think people will come to realize the genius of Brittany Murphy and come to
regret the way they treated her while she was alive.”

ANTIDEPRESSANTS: Suicide of Soldier: Iraq/Oklahoma

Paragraphs four & five read:  “”He e-mailed his best friend and told her what to do with all of his stuff, and he said he was going to visit his brother,” Brazil said by telephone from Claremore.  ‘Our brother died five years ago’.

“Hastings had trouble sleeping and had been taking antidepressants, but family members don’t know if the medication played a role, Brazil said.”

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/tx/6582147.html

OKLAHOMA CITY The latest Oklahoma soldier to die in Iraq had become depressed and demoralized by the deaths of friends in combat, and family members suspect he committed suicide, his sister said Friday.

The Defense Department announced Thursday that Spc. Matthew Hastings, 23, of Claremore, died Monday from injuries he received in an incident not related to combat in Baghdad. A cause of death hasn’t been released by military officials, who say an investigation is under way.

Michelle Brazil believes her brother committed suicide based on a recent e-mail his best friend received just before he died.

“He e-mailed his best friend and told her what to do with all of his stuff, and he said he was going to visit his brother,” Brazil said by telephone from Claremore. “Our brother died five years ago.”

Hastings had trouble sleeping and had been taking antidepressants, but family members don’t know if the medication played a role, Brazil said.

His yearlong deployment was scheduled to end in December, she said. Family and friends got to see him during a two-week visit in April.

“He told us his plans for when he got back,” Brazil said. “He recently did some shopping online and ordered some clothing and that package arrived here in July, so he didn’t plan this for very long.”

Hastings was assigned to the 582nd Medical Logistics Company, 1st Medical Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command out of Fort Hood, Texas.

He joined the military in August 2006 as a light-wheel vehicle mechanic and had been stationed at Fort Hood since February 2007. The unit provides basic medical services, said Tyler Broadway, a Fort Hood spokesman.

Hastings, a 2005 graduate from high school in Broken Arrow, liked to hunt and fish and “was just a comic,” Brazil said.

“He had a lot of friends. He always made everybody laugh,” she said.

Although Hastings’ death is still under investigation, the U.S. Army has developed a program to respond to increased suicides among soldiers. Beginning Oct. 1, soldiers will take a test to see how they respond to stress and to assess their resiliency, officials announced this week.

The Army said Aug. 13 that there were 62 confirmed suicides and 34 unconfirmed cases from Jan. 1 through July 31.

As for Hastings, Brazil said an autopsy is being conducted on her brother and his body hadn’t arrived in Oklahoma yet.

“I’m fine right now. I go in and out,” Brazil said. “I wake up in the morning and realize it’s not a nightmare and I cry for hours. After that, it’s just planning for the funeral. I’m sure it will soak in again soon.

“It’s such a shock.”

Hayhurst Funeral Home in Broken Arrow is handling funeral arrangements for Hastings, Brazil said.

Besides his sister, Hastings is survived by his mother and stepfather, Lawanda and Roger Lowry of Coweta; his father, Clark Hastings Jr., of Redfield, Ark.; grandfather Clark Hastings Sr., of Jacksonville, Ark.; and grandparents, Wanda and Vernon Cline of Pryor.

Hastings was going through a divorce and had no children, Brazil said.

An AP database based on Department of Defense news releases indicates Hastings was at least the 75th Oklahoma military serviceman to die in the war in Iraq.

Their brother, Clark Hastings III, preceded him in death.

Hatch death ruled a suicide

August 26, 2009

After a 10-month investigation, the death of Kimberly R. Hatch has been ruled to be a suicide.Advertisement

The 40-year-old woman was found dead in her house at 704 Shady Drive, Endwell on Oct. 11 of last year after troopers responded to a 911 call.

The results of an autopsy and toxicological examination have determined the cause of death to be from respiratory suppression with pulmonary edema, secondary to a drug overdose, a release from the state police says.

The drugs present that caused the overdose were determined to be Celexa and Effexor, medications prescribed for depression and anxiety, the release adds. Alcohol was also present.

Dr. James Hayes, the coroner in the case, has ruled the death to be a suicide, said Cpt. James E. Barnes, of the state police.

Hayes said the investigation took 10 months because police had to consider all aspects in the case, consult with the district attorney and coroner’s offices and brief the family on the developments.

The case is now closed, the release says

CELEXA: Death: Probably a Suicide: Day After Leaving Hospital: England

Paragraph nine reads:  “Consultant pathologist Dr Dariusz Golka said the cause of death was overdose of the anti-depressant citalopram  [Celexa].”

Man took overdose a day after hospital

Published Date: 12 August 2009

A MAN died from a fatal overdose less than 24 hours after being released from hospital, an inquest heard.

Philip John Bromley, of Handsworth Road in North Shore, was found on his kitchen floor by his daughter on the morning of July 29, 2007.

An ambulance was called, but paramedics could not save the 40-year-old former civil servant.

Blackpool Coroner’s Court was told the previous day he had taken anoverdose of blue tablets – later revealed to be benzodiazepines he had bought on the street – crushed up into a drink.

His daughter had called an ambulance after finding him seeming like he was drunk, “slurring” and with blue staining on his lips.

He was discharged from hospital later that night.

The locum doctor who treated him had told the inquest Mr Bromley, who suffered mental health problems and was under the crisis team from Lancashire Care Trust, said his observations, clinical condition and blood samples were normal.

Mr Bromley was seen by the mental health night practitioner at the hospital, who stated in a report about the incident he had assessed Mr Bromley and although he indicated he had on-going difficulties, he denied any suicidal intent.

Consultant pathologist Dr Dariusz Golka said the cause of death was overdose of the anti-depressant citalopram.

Coroner Anne Hind said she could only record the verdict Mr Bromley took his own life. She said: “It is very concerning how easily available such drugs are.”

4/29/2001 – NY-CITY AGENCY'S PSYCH DRUGS IMPERIL FOSTER KIDS

About three years ago the Seattle Times or the Seattle PI did a series of
articles on the drugging of foster children and the number of deaths as a
result of that deadly practice. Now the New York Post has given us another
article detailing the same problem in the East. Several years ago I learned
that we too have the problem here in the Rocky Mountain area.

My children are adopted and they have always wanted a younger brother or
sister. We looked for several years for a child we could make a part of our
family. We were not able to find one available that was not being drugged for
a variety of reasons. I asked an agency if they had any children available
who were not on drugs, explaining that drug withdrawal is not where I would
want to begin a relationship with a child.

The woman at the agency lowered her voice and said, “Isn’t it horrible?! We
have a doctor in charge here who is drugging all of these children and there
is nothing we can do about it!”

In my opinion, to do this to the most helpless among us – a child alone with
no family to protect them from the drugging – is the most damning statement
against our society there is.

In the news this past weekend we all heard about tragic death of an adopted
child, little Candace Newmaker, who died during a controversial “rebirthing”
therapy in Colorado. She was being given this “treatment” for the diagnosis
of “attachment disorder.” As you read about her death you learn that the
expert witness in this case could not say if it was the therapy that caused
her death or the drugs – Rispirdol being taken at her death AFTER a long
period of treatment with antidepressants. Because the increase in serotonin
shuts off the bronchial tubes it can produce death by asphyxiation – the
cause of death in Candace’s case. We also know that when the serotonin is
increased to too high a level by these drugs it leads to Serotonin Syndrome
which includes multiple organ failure.

Now I invite you into Candace’s drug-induced world – the same world which you
will see was obviously what produced the symptoms that led her and her
desperate adoptive mother into this controversial therapy. As you read the
list of symptoms of increased serotonin and decreased serotonin metabolism in
the document on our site called The Aftermath
(http://drugawareness.org/Archives/Miscellaneous/MRAfter.html) you will see
everyone of the side effects Candace was having that left her mother reeling
from the experience.

Excerpts from the Denver Rocky Mountain News:

* When the local social services workers contacted her with information
about Candace, she was told the girl had a “strong temperment,” that she was
prone to uncontrollable outbursts. Candace had been through six foster homes
by the time she was five, and her birth family had neglected her, Newmaker
was told.

* One night in the spring of 1999, Newmaker woke at 2:30 a.m. and smelled
smoke, she said. She ran down the hall to Candace’s room, but it was empty.
She opened the next door to the guest room and found her daughter.

* “She was sitting on the bed in the guest room with spent matches all
around her,” Newmaker said, crying. “I’m so frightened for her. She could
have hurt herself, killed herself.”

* Speaking publicly for the first time about Candace’s death during that
therapy, Jeane Newmaker said her daughter’s psychological problems were so
advanced that she started a fire in their home, once sexually assaulted two
children, and would fly into hourlong rages.

* “I thought she was deteriorating before my very eyes,” Newmaker said. “I
was not prepared for the level of dysfunction I saw in Candace.”

CITY AGENCY’S PSYCH DRUGS IMPERIL FOSTER KIDS

By DOUGLAS MONTERO
——————————————————————————

MOTHER’S NIGHTMARE:
Erline Kidd, with sons Devon (left) and Von, is fighting to stop the city
from medicating her little girl, who’s in foster care. “My daughter is like a
zombie,” she says.
– Yechiam Gal

April 16, 2001 — ERLINE KIDD doesn’t want her 8-year-old daughter to end up
like a boy named Cecil Reed – a corpse at the city morgue.
Kidd fears for the life of her daughter Shaevonnah – “Shae” – because she’s
in the custody of the city’s Administration for Children’s Services – just
like Cecil was.

And just like Cecil, ACS is allowing doctors to give Shae a cocktail of
psychiatric medications that Kidd feels is harming her baby.

Kidd’s objections are being ignored, just like those of Cecil’s father, who
stopped complaining April 7, 2000, when his 16-year-old son suffered a heart
attack triggered by a combination of four drugs, and died.

“I was begging them to stop,” said Cecil Reed Jr., a city worker who lives in
The Bronx.

“Jesus,” said Dr. Peter Breggin, an author and critic of psychiatric
treatment of children. “They were treating him like you would treat a raving
psychotic.”

ACS says it doesn’t know how many of its 31,000 children are on psychiatric
medication, but advocacy groups say complaints from parents arrive at their
offices on a “regular basis.”

A state audit of 401 randomly selected kids last year found that more than
half were being treated for mental problems – and that most likely means
medication.

Some advocates charge the foster-care agencies contracted to care for nearly
90 percent of ACS’s children use medication to “control” the emotionally
troubled kids.

Parents like those of Tariq Mohammad, 16, face medical-neglect charges in
Family Court if they object too vigorously.

Tariq was on medication for schizophrenia, an illness he says he never had,
and its side effects made him violently ill. The family sued ACS in civil
court and won after a court-appointed psychiatrist determined Tariq didn’t
need any medication.

“I am outraged, not just for me, but for many kids that are being medicated,”
Tariq said. “It really screwed me up. I guess they do it because they don’t
want to deal with us.”

Tariq, who lived in the foster system since he was 11, says his pleas for an
alternative treatment were summarily ignored.

The ACS says parents are entitled to get a second medical opinion or hire a
lawyer to fight the case in court.

The mad rush to medicate, a nationwide phenomenon, is especially delicate
with foster kids. The ACS relies on the judgment of doctors subcontracted by
its 60 foster agencies to evaluate and treat children, agency spokeswoman
Jennifer Faulk said.

The ACS is supposed to monitor the treatment, but overworked caseworkers
can’t – or don’t – micromanage each kid, so they defer to doctors.

Hank Orenstein, the director of the advocacy agency C-Plan, said the ACS
exhibits a “naivete” in mental-health services.

“It’s a relief to have other professions make the decision but as you can see
some children are not always best served with medication,” said Orenstein,
whose group is part of Public Advocate Mark Green’s office.

Parents end up becoming helpless watchdogs handcuffed by bureaucracy and
poverty.

“I hated it,” said Cecil Reed’s father, a Baptist church deacon, describing
the slow medication death of his son at the Bronx Children’s Psychiatric
Center.

Reed began noticing a problem with Cecil’s treatment three years before his
son died. Reed, who was threatened with medical-neglect charges, said Cecil
was “sleepwalking” after the hospital began serving the boy cocktails.

Doctors said Cecil had schizoaffective disorder and post-traumatic stress
disorder but his father claims his son wasn’t insane, just a strong-willed
kid who like any youngster would lash out after being separated from family
and friends.

“Daddy, I don’t want to take medicine anymore . . . They are just using me as
a guinea pig,” Reed remembers his son saying.

When the usually cooperative Reed questioned the medication in late 1999, the
hospital simply got consent from the ACS behind the father’s back, he
charged. Faulk didn’t respond to the allegation.

He learned about the deadly cocktail the day after his son died.

The autopsy report notes Cecil’s body contained “potentially toxic” levels of
pindolol, a heart-damaging drug never tested or recommended for children.

Breggin said serving these cocktails to children is “so dangerous and
experimental that it wouldn’t be permitted under any legitimate rule of
research.”

The ACS, the state’s Office of Children and Family Services and the state
Office of Mental Health, which runs the Bronx facility where Cecil died,
refused to comment because the family plans to sue.

Erline Kidd’s face sunk when she was told about Cecil. Kidd charged she
always learns about the drug cocktails her daughter gets after the fact. All
contact with her daughter’s doctor is arranged by the ACS.

Kidd, a reformed cocaine addict, is fighting two wars: to get her daughter
back from the ACS, like she did with her two sons, ages 12 and 9, in January,
and to stop the drugging of the girl.

Little Shae is on Seroquel and Thorazine for psychosis, and four other drugs.

“I just know it’s too much – my daughter is like a zombie,” the mother said.
“One time I saw her and I wanted to grab her and run.”
